A shadow moved in the distance, just at the edge of our visibility. The octopus’s grip became almost painful as it pressed its body closer to Sammy’s thigh.

The fear was contagious. We scanned the blue, looking for the threat that had turned our friendly octopus into a terrified hitchhiker. Whatever was out there was large enough to make a master of camouflage seek protection from a group of noisy, bubbling humans.
