The arrogance of some patients didn’t just end with herbs; sometimes it involved a total denial of their own biology. A mother brought her 14-year-old daughter in with severe abdominal pain and spotting.
Every time I tried to ask the teenager about her history, the mother would cut her off, shouting that her daughter was a “pure virgin.” Even when the lab results came back positive for pregnancy, the mother remained defiant. “Your tests are unreliable and untrue!” she screamed, grabbing her daughter’s arm and dragging her out of the ER. The girl was doubled over in pain, clearly suffering from an ectopic pregnancy.
They vanished into the parking lot before we could intervene, leaving us with the haunting knowledge that the girl’s life was now in the hands of a mother’s denial.
